Focusing On What Matters

I had the opportunity to see Peter J. Daniels, an Australian businessman, speak on having life principles to live by. Focus was one life principle he shared regarding growing in human potential and God’s plans.
While Mr. Daniels was speaking, he was distracted. He continued to speak as if there wasn’t any distractions. He showed what it means to concentrate in that moment.
Focus is concentration, according to the Webster 1828 Dictionary.
Proverbs 4:25 tells what it means to focus.
Proverbs 4:25 (NLT) states, “Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you.”
Lack of focus has been the battlefield of the mind since Eve was deceived in the Garden of Eden.
One day, a serpent got Eve’s attention. This serpent used deception to communicate with Eve, taking her focus from three essential matters.
These matters were:
1. God
2. Her identity
3. God’s instructions not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil
Any form of deception is a distraction to take you away from God, your identity, and God’s instructions for you.
Overall, the truth.
The following are three truths to consider when focusing on what matters:
The truth of who God is. Exodus 34:6 (NKJV) states, “The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth.” Keeping the mind on the truth of God is having focus.
The truth of your identity. Romans 8:29 (CSB) states, “For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.” Focusing on the truth of identity keeps your focus on Christ in you.
The truth of God’s knowledge for you. Colossians 1:9 (NIV) states, “We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives.” The knowledge of God’s will for you is the truth to focus on God’s knowledge for you.
The following are some questions to consider to focus on what matters:
Is this information the truth or deception?
Am I growing spiritually?
Is this situation a distraction?
Does this decision move me closer to God’s plan for me?
What is God’s will for me?
What should I focus on today?
The truth about God, identity, and the knowledge of God’s will are areas of focus to concentrate on what matters.
Be well,
