Every individual has unlimited potential to increase their value with their talent, skills, products or services. Just think for a moment that you can increase your value in your career or business this year. Yes, this year! Reality is our value does not automatically increase. We must make the investment in ourselves by applying values to increase our value. Sounds repetitive! Value has more than one definition. One definition for value is the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something. Another definition for value is a person’s principles or standards of behavior. Based on these definitions, we must make an investment in our personal values to increase in value.
On a warm February day in Michigan, I enjoyed spending time with my family. We decided to try a restaurant we never experienced. We were excited and wondering about the quality of the food. Upon entering the restaurant, I noticed how engaged the hostesses were while greeting us. Their greetings increased my curiosity to experience their food. As we were being escorted to our table we were greeted by additional employees. The waitress was attentive to our needs while serving us. The food was delicious and exceeded our expectation. I reflected on our experience while riding home and came to the conclusion that the staff were intentional about providing customer service. Their business value is excellent customer service. My observation of their customer service was confirmed when I saw 21 years of customer service recognition on the restaurant's wall. This is one value that has kept them in business for 21 years at a prominent location.
What are your values of standard of behavior regarding your career or business? How is your career or business increasing in value? What values have you connected with pursuing your goals?
The following are 4 ways to increase your value for 2017:
Identify three to five values that are your strengths. Apply your values that are strengths in your daily living. The strengths could be integrity, having a positive attitude, accountability, or being of excellence.
Empower Others. Create an environment that empower others to feel valued. Giving your expertise, resources, or encouragement to others who are colleagues, employees, business partners or customers causes you to increase in value.
Be Consistent. Be a movement leader not an emotional leader by being consistent with living your values daily. Consistency creates a discipline to live your values daily. You will not compromise your values when outside circumstances challenge your emotions to act opposite of your values.
Stay in your strength zone regarding your skills or service. Competence establishes credibility to your value. Your strengths displays your competence. Be open to the opportunity to collaborate with individuals when your career or business is growing beyond your strengths.
We all have values. Life challenges and distractions causes us to lose focus on our personal strengths. Therefore, it is important to make a commitment to be intentional to identify and apply values in daily living. We are known by our fruits. This is how people identify if we are authentic. You are valuable!
