I want to tell you about one of the courageous women that initiated change regarding the Flint Water Crisis. Her name is Nayyirah Shariff. I followed her on social media. I noticed how she was outspoken and passionate about the people of Flint getting clean water. I didn’t know how she was one of the instruments of change until I watched the movie, “Flint”, on Lifetime. Nayyirah Shariff, LeeAnne Walters, and Melissa Mays worked together to expose how the contaminated water effected their health. They used their influence to initiated change.
I honor all those who played a role in exposing Flint Water Crisis. I choose to highlight Nayyirah Shariff because she was quiet in high school. I noticed her quiet strength because she was positive about how she conducted herself among peers. She is a leader who actions are measured by her influence. She challenged societal norms of contaminated water by expressing the abnormal effects it had on the citizens of Flint.
There is one word that shines the light on her influence. That word is initiate. We are faced with abnormal situations in our lives but we have the influence to solve problems. The abnormalities could be in our homes, organizations, or community. We bring normality to every situation with our influence.
We have to stand for normality as people of influence. This happens when we initiate change. The opposite of initiate is complacent. Complacency breeds abnormalities in our life when we don’t stand for what is right. This causes us to enter a life or an environment of frustration.
The following are 3 ways to initiate change as leaders:
Solve the problem. Identify the problem that you have the ability to solve through your influence. This could be at home, work, or community. If it’s within your control, you are equipped to be the change agent. This includes analyzing how the problem is breeding toxicity in your life or environment. Problems don’t go away they grow when we ignore them.
Go with your heart. You may not have the immediate answer to the problem, but your instinct will tell you where to begin. You will get the solution, resources, and support when you act on your heart passion.
Take risk. Making the decision to initiate change is a challenge. You will have to make the sacrifice to move away from popular opinion. Most often the majority are complacent with abnormal conditions. Look at the big picture and identify what is the payoff to initiate change. If the reward is greater than the risk, make your move.
Influence is a tool we were born with to be change agents. There are cause and effect to every situation. We must identify our influence in a cause. The cause is any issue that is a burden to a culture. You are a change agent.
What problems will you solve with your influence?
