Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said during his I’ve Been to the Mountain Top speech, “Whenever men and women straighten their backs up, they are going somewhere, because a man can't ride your back unless it is bent”.
When I heard the quote while listening to his speech, I thought of a having a mindset of resilience. Resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. It includes having mental toughness.
He shared examples of opposition the civil rights movement faced while protesting for freedom. They were met with dogs, water hoses, and arrest, but kept the resilience to keep moving forward. He challenged the audience to maintain their stance on freedom.
What is opposing you to live your dream? It takes hope and faith to have the resilience to move forward in life after experiencing setbacks.
The good news is God created you to have the mental toughness to move past factors that oppose your freedom to live the life he planned for you. As a believer in Christ, you have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16).
This is part of your authentic nature. The mind of Christ gives you the ability to conduct your life the way God created you. This includes believing you have the ability to advance in any area of your life.
What is the mind of Christ? A mindset Jesus had when he walked the earth as a man. There are many intellectual strengths of the mind of Christ. Jesus used his mind to recognize God was his source to live his purpose. Jesus mind was connected to God’s thought and ways.
The starting point to experiencing the mind of Christ is living a life depending on God in every area of your life. This includes praying daily to receive God’s strength and wisdom to maintain your stance to live your purpose. Jesus said in John 5:19, "Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.”
Here are three ways to take your stance of resilience in the mind of Christ:
Pray. Ask God for his wisdom and strength to move you beyond opposition. Have an open mind to receive his instruction.
Be persistent. Keep your mental toughness. This lead to maintaining a positive attitude in the midst of adversity. Your belief drives behavior to keep your stance.
Focus on the outcome. Where your focus goes your energy flows. Your focus directs your energy towards your course of action with the end in mind.
What situation do you think is impossible in your life? What dream have you stopped pursuing? What area do you desire change in your life?
I challenge you to depend on God to source your mind with what you need now to live. You have the mind of Christ.
